The iPad Generation: Techno Obsession

In an age of increasing technological advancement, it seems society has become obsessed with
having access to the latest gadgets and toys. This fascination appears to have peaked with the
2019 release of the iPad Air.

The original version was released to a furor of public, and media, interest with everybody from
poor, debt-riddled students to well-off businessmen queuing for hours to get their hands on one.
With the continued quest for all things Apple, are the public just keeping up with a fast-paced
technical revolution, or are they simply being brainwashed into believing over- publicized hype?

iPhone Craze

The launch of the iPhone seemed to signal a global infatuation with the Apple brand. iPhones were
sold within the first year of going on sale. Boasting touch-screen technology, apps, and an
integrated iPod, the iPhone certainly stood out in an over-saturated mobile phone market. Other
manufacturers seemed slow to catch on: Motorola debuted the Xoom in February 2011 and
Samsung release the Galaxy Tab in June 2011.
But Apple appeared to have the edge reporting sales of 11 million iPhones in the last quarter of
2009 and got a 35 percent sale increase in 2010. The launch of the iPad only appeared to cement this growing infatuation.

iPad Cheapened by Suicides

An apparent western-obsession with anything Apple-related is reflected in the May 2010 reports
of supposed attempted suicides at Apple’s supplying factories in China. It was reported that a 19
a year-old girl was so exhausted through over-work that she leaped from her fourth-floor dormitory to avoid going to work.
She survived but was left paralyzed from the waste down. It’s been claimed by UK tabloids that
ten workers at the factory successfully committed suicide between January and May 2010. It
may be unfair to suggest the popularity of the iPod, iPhone, and iPad is to blame for such tragic
events but is there an obvious indirect connection?

Revolutionary iPod

When the iPod was released in the U.S. in October 2001, it was labeled as ‘a breakthrough MP3
player’ by Apple. Everybody seemed to be talking about how amazing it was and what geniuses
Apple was. This could well be justified as, prior to the launch of the iPod, there wasn’t a music
player on the market that was as slim or small (6.5 ounces) or that could hold as many songs
(1,000).

Apple seems to be at the forefront when it comes to designing eye-catching, ultra-slim technically
advanced products; how long our obsession with them will last is anybody’s guess, and what will
happen when we become bored with good-looking gadgets and gizmos, nobody knows.
